Abstract
2021 marks the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Varna Archaeological Society (VAS). The facts surrounding its creation and subsequent activities are well known from the annual reports and bulletins it has published through the years. Local press coverage of VAS activities up to 1915, when Bulgaria joined the First World War, gives a different perspective that complements historiographical research. Various news articles have been selected for this purpose. They cover the establishment of the VAS and its museum collection, and its scientific and public activities, and also VAS actions aimed at attracting Varna residents to its main goals and activities, alongside donations and criminal actions by individual citizens.
