Abstract

The review presents a book published less than a year ago. Its authors – archaeologists, historians and local historians – share with the reader their findings about the history of Byala, a town in the province of Varna. The archaeologists talk about the discoveries they have made over the previous decade on the Cape of St. Athanasius near Byala, while the historians describe the Late Mediaeval village of Ak Dere (future Byala) in the early centuries of Ottoman rule and the National Revival. The stories that follow take the reader through village life – from deep in the past, all the way to 1989. The book features numerous carefully crafted and selected illustrations that bring this story to life, in a kaleidoscopic history of how this beautiful Black Sea town has developed over the past two and a half millennia.
